A kimono clad Japanese doll is housed in a scroll cut cage that is punctuated with protective thorns. The doll is a geisha è¸è
, a term that literally means âart-person.â Geishas are highly trained in the art of entertainment: Dance, music, conversation. They are the epitome of what is considered the refined culture of Japan. The professional geisha can also cross the blurry line into sex work. With Westernization and interest in Japanese culture, the doll and the women she represents can also cross the blurry line of being fetishized. It is a complex life and history. What is pure appreciation for a culture and what is viewing through an ulterior lens?
The doll metaphorically symbolizes a minority person who is protected by a psychological armor of how she is viewed or considered. The thorns protect the person while it also encumbers her.
The dollâs cage rests on posts and lintel with the characters of âwelcomeâ æ¬¢è¿ and âfarewellâ åè§ on either side of the lintel as signage for the act of entering one world while leaving a past world behind.
