monotype print (1/1)
Carnival of the Animals imagines a party of exotic beasts on parade. It is inspired by Camille Saint-Saëns suite of 14 movements by the same name where animals and groups of animalâs voices are mimicked with instruments.
This print is a good example of how I approach monotype printing. I first draw, with a pen knife and scissors, shapes in cardstock to create paper stencils inspired by words, experience or music. The stencils are then composed and printed in layers with oil based ink on an open acrylic plate with an etching bed press. There are six color and compositional layers in Carnival of the Animals with one of them a carved soft-block layer that was hand printed to the plate before it passed through the press and onto the other ink layers.
