oil on canvas
While painting this Deco-style building, the proprietor, Steve Allen, kindly offered to give me a tour of the inside. It's a veritable radio museum of old radio technologies once used to regulate the antenna signal (which keeps getting outdated and replaced with smaller versions). The excess space is now used to house Steve's old radio and memorabilia collection. His father was the proprietor before him. I also met the man whose father originally built the building in 1941. He said that back then all of Vashon was clear-cut, and was more of an agricultural and industrial area with radio towers. He moved off the island a long time ago and was surprised to hear people talking about Vashon being a "beautiful place", to which he now admits it is.
