In Botticelli's painting Birth of Venus (1485-1486), the Roman Goddess Venus is portrayed in the nude, which was considered controversial at the time, as it went against Christian values. As the goddess of beauty, fertility, and love, Venus is portrayed here in my reimagined work, in the figure of a Barbie doll.
Pregnant Barbie encompasses the polar opposite stereotypes of women as sex object or mother. Her familiar form is re-envisioned, illustrating that it can be just as controversial to choose to have a child as it is to choose not to have a child. Barbie here, breaks the stereotypical assumptions of her character.
