Hemorrhage draws attention to the blood loss associated with gestation and childbirth. This bleeding comes in many forms and is often overlooked in conversations surrounding reproduction. During gestation, iron levels drop as the body works to produce fetal blood flow. Vaginal spotting may occur throughout pregnancy. In labor, it is considered ânormalâ to lose up to 500 milliliters of blood if the delivery is vaginal, and one liter of blood if cesarean. Postpartum hemorrhage, which may result in upwards of five liters of blood loss, is the leading cause of maternal mortality. Vaginal bleeding continues for six weeks postpartum, and nipples crack and bleed from breastfeeding. The childbearing process requires monumental sacrifice from the human body, and this sacrifice should never be forced upon anybody who is not entirely willing to make it.
