cyanotype on acid-free watercolor paper
Within hours of hearing about the US Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade on Friday, June 24, 2022, I started this (ongoing) series of uterine silhouette cyanotypes. Wasps carry a variety of meanings that suddenly swarmed in my mind: the insidious invasion of bodily autonomy; collective rage, pain, fear; a violent twist on the âbirds and beesâ metaphor often used around reproduction; and the 19th-century framing of abortion as a threat to Americaâs upper middle-class White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASP) population.
Dead insects, lace, plants, jewelry, and a broken glass bowl cast shadows onto painted photo-sensitive emulsion, permanently capturing their shapes during exposure in sunlight.
