Artist Statement: Everything about creating a tapestry captivates me. From spinning and dyeing the wool, making the design, warping the loom, to finally weaving. Using handspun wool, I fill in the landforms with hundreds of shades of colors that I hand dye for each piece. Abstract landscapes are what I refer to as my subject matter. A sense of place is important to me. Moving from an island off the coast of British Columbia to the high alpine desert of New Mexico in 1989 was an exhilarating experience for me.
The similarity of both landscapes was surprising. I have carried my inner landscape with me as I have transited from the ocean to the desert and back again. The fluidity of the west coast was within me during my time in the desert. The bright colors and presence of light that I experienced in the southwest are within me now that Iâm back on the coast. The blues and greens of island life are apparent in my recent work. The bright colors also remain as a reminder of bright light. I seek a sense of timelessness. My inner landscapes translated into a tapestry will often remind a viewer of a place they are familiar with. This is a cause of great satisfaction for me.
