Heliopolis, The Tears of Ra, is the latest from my Magic Carpet Ride series of monotype print collages inspired by ancient cities of the Near and Middle east. Heliopolis is the Greek name for Egyptâs ancient City of the Sun, where temples to the Egyptian creation gods Atum and Ra were first erected 4,600 years ago. Many myths tell Raâs story. A favorite of mine, âThe Tears of Ra,â is from the #825 Henry Salt Magical Papyrus, now in the British Museum. In the story, Ra weeps and the water that flows from his eyes upon the ground, turns into bees. âThe bee made his honeycomb, and busied himself with the flowers of every plant; and so wax was made and also honey out of the tears of the god Raâ
