Artist Statement: The tapestries presented here reflect my recent focus on Washington State rivers. Water has always been a subject for my work. Living on the beach, I am regularly informed of the change of tides, comings and goings of storms and the ever present wildlife that depend on the bounty in the waters. Similarly, the need to sustain the health of our rivers as part of this larger system has brought me to document my visits to spots on the rivers. I have come to put the latitude and longitude into the weavings so viewers can experience these places as well. With climate change influencing the fate of rivers globally, this project may turn into an historical document.
Tapestry is a textile technique. It is woven on a loom. There are two sets of threads, the warp and weft. The warp threads are completely covered by the colored weft threads which form the image. It is a very slow technique which grows by about an inch a day, so can take many months to finish.
