Press Release: Vashon Center for the Arts major fundraising event for 2024

We're taking a fresh approach to fundraising this year and putting the artist first with a new event called The Artist's Table on June 1st and a new month-long gallery installation called "The Secret Garden."

VCA has had Art Auction/Galas for over 20 years, and our previous events were terrific and successful. Now we are seeing more and more non-profits moving away from this model due to declining results and small staffs to implement. Like our peers, VCA experienced lower results than expected last year in both the silent and live auction. Bidding on art and experiences were down. The generous works of art many of you donated, went for less than their value. After the 2023 Gala Art Auction, we had many discussions with auction attendees and artists, reviewed what was effective, what wasn't, and what needed improving upon.

Our fundraising goals remain the same this year: to raise important funds for our Scholarship program and operations while growing a “culture of philanthropy” amongst our patrons. To shift the patron experience and emphasize our commitment to artists, especially as it pertains to valuing their works, we’re trying a new direction this year.

Our plan is to merge our two large fundraising pushes into one month. Our major Art fundraising event will now take place in June, same month as our Garden Tour. The month starts with “The Artist’s Table” (June 1st), a dinner party at which the artists are the guests of honor, and their creativity is the toast of the evening. Each year, different artists are spotlighted and invited to join us for the dinner. For our donors and art enthusiasts, the Artist's Table is a time to engage with artists, have a more in-depth discussion, and feel closer to the art and creative process.

For the gallery art donations, we decided to have it a themed installation. This year, we are tying it in with our Garden Tour with a collection called "The Secret Garden." Gallery visitors experience the gallery transformed into a garden of artwork. The show will be installed by June 1st and stay up through Garden Tour weekend.

Within a couple of weeks, we will make a call for procuring art inspired by gardens, including flora, fauna, organic and ecological, and even mythical elements like fairies or dragons. Anything you feel is inspired by gardens, forests, water, and the outdoors. Artwork will be sold at the price set by the artists (not auctioned). As it is a fundraising show, commissions will align with our previous fundraising events, where artists can receive 25% of the sale price or donate 100% to VCA. Stay tuned for more information; the call for art will be announced shortly.

It is our desire that these fundraising events will put focus back on our most valuable asset, our artist community. We hope that you will join us in this new adventure. With change comes both excitement and uncertainty, and I'm open to answering questions and concerns about any of this. More information will be forthcoming, but I wanted to introduce you to our new ideas as soon as possible.

As always, don't hesitate to give me a call or email or stop by the gallery for a chat.
Thank you for your continued support. We couldn’t do what we do without you!

Best,

Lynann Politte
