The Jizo is a Buddhist saint, or Bodhisattva, and his original name in Sanskrit (Kshitigarbha) translates as âWomb of the Earthâ. Mizuko translates as âChild of the Waterâ or âWater Babyâ. While making this statue of the JizÅ, I wanted it to have a feeling of movement, and rising from the water, while cradling a child in his arms.
In Japan, those who have lost a child or have chosen to end a pregnancy, would make an offering to the Mizuko JizÅ at a Buddhist temple. This act allows the JizÅ to âfindâ the lost child, floating in the water of life, and deliver them to the next life or to another realm. Parents may also request a ceremony asking the JizÅ to console them in their grief and loss. In this act of forgiveness and compassion, JizÅ then will guide and protect the child in the afterlife.
